Calvin Chow - Photographed by Norm Yip

Calvin Chow was someone I had known for quite some time on the internet before actually meeting him in person. It may have over a year, or perhaps two. I recalled seeing images of him, wearing the occasional swimwear and seeing a very well developed upper body. Toward the end of last year, I struck up a conversation with him and made arrangements try to meet up, just to talk about the shoot. Two times we were supposed to meet and two times we never made it. Then a few weeks ago, we finally caught up with one another. It was clear that this young man was very nervous and fearful about being photographed, and about what he would be getting into. As it turned out, he very much wanted to be photographed, but his other half was very much against it. We decided in the end that we would do a very simple test shoot without going into anything beyond being shirtless. Here are a few of the shots I quite liked.

Vietnamese An Tôn Thất - Composer, singer & musician

An Tôn Thất is a composer, singer and musician that I greatly admire. His music is very personal, emotionally charged and haunting. There is a gentle darkness and depth that to his creativity that we both share, and perhaps that is why we both gravitate towards black and white work. The opportunity to meet and photograph this exceptionally gifted man came twice. The first time the time was simply too short, but the second time was more successful. This particular portait was one of the photographs taken of him while he was sitting nude. There is still a sense of vulnerability in his eyes, yet his gaze is very direct and telling. What is he trying to say to me?

Albanian-Cambodian Monika Shows His Moves

I admit to not knowing where Albania; my geography is really bad. Monika appeared in my studio after my friend said he found someone that would be perfect for my work in the Asian male collection. With probably one of the most exotic looking face I have seen in a long time, Monika came strolling through the studio with a very friendly and excited look in his eyes. I knew that he had experience on stage, and as soon as I began shooting, his talent and love to perform was evident. He is actually a professional aerial artist. The image that you see here was taken at the beginning of our photo session, where I had him move and groove to music. He’s got a super tanned body and needless to say, a very sexy look.

Innocent, but not really: Ah Lok

This is a photograph I took of Ah Lok several years ago, while he was learning how to pose for the camera. He is local guy from Hong Kong with a natural physique. Honestly, I do not know him very well, having met him through a friend. He has posed for my nude photography sessions several times years ago, and I have somehow lost touch with him. What I can say though, is that Ah Lok possesses a natural ability to move and pose in front of the camera, whereby he transitions from one pose to the next in a lyrical manner.

Introducing Vietnamese-Australian Andy T

Andy is of Vietnamese descent and from Melbourne, Australia. He was spotted by my friend Leandro, who thought he would make a welcome addition the Asian Male collection of guys. I tried desperately to get him to take off his jeans, but he simply refused, saying they were too skinny. Well, if his upper body was any indication, I never would have known! Time to do leg presses huh? Regardless, I got this nice shot of him why lying on the floor. So many guys now with tattoos….

Cover Model to 1.AM Sean Ching

I remember interview day when Sean Ching came strolling into my Sheung Wan studio. Very confident and self-assured, we seemed to connect in some strange way. We agreed to do a shoot and arranged to meet up the following week. No sooner than 10 minutes went by and off his clothes went. I was taken slightly back. He looked at me and noticed my discomfort and quipped ‘Oh not now?’ He smiled inside and drew up his pants. It was a great shoot. This image became the cover to my first book, The Asian Male - 1.AM. available on Amazon
